Cabinet Costs

Kitchen Cabinets are like furniture. Prices vary widely. For example, a drawer with hardwood rails, plywood bottom and dovetail joints will cost considerably more than a particleboard drawer with stapled butt joints. Better-quality custom and semi-custom cabinets are made from 3/4" or 1/2" furniture-grade plywood covered with hardwood veneer. Drawers have full-extension roller hardware. Less-expensive cabinets are made from 3/8" or 1/2" particleboard, usually with a melamine coating.

"Ready to assemble" cabinets cost the least and are sold primarily in D-I-Y outlets. Options are limited and units require about an hour of assembly before they are ready to install.

The advantage of custom-made cabinets is flexibility in style, finish, size and design. For example, custom cabinets can be made in any width or height to fit any kitchen. Semi-custom cabinets come in widths that increment 3 inches at a time, such as 15", 18", 21" and 24". Most installations will require a filler strip to extend the line of cabinets to exactly the right length. The disadvantage of custom cabinets is price – about double the cost of semi-custom cabinets.

About 60 percent of the cost of most cabinets is the wood itself. So you can expect to pay more for cabinets made with exotic wood veneers such as cherry, hickory, alder, redwood or teak on a plywood base. Oak, birch, maple and pine are the most common wood species used for cabinets. The least expensive cabinets have a melamine or plastic laminate surface on a particleboard core.

Wood cabinets are stained to bring out the warmth of the wood grain and then sealed for moisture protection. Many kitchen cabinet manufactures offer special custom glazes and layered finishes at extra cost – usually about 10 percent more than standard stained cabinets.

Kitchen Cabinet Construction. Stock-grade kitchen cabinets are manufactured in standard sizes and warehoused until sold. Semi-custom grade kitchen cabinets are available in a wide variety of styles and shapes. Within limits, the manufacturer builds the kitchen cabinets to match the kitchen design. Custom-grade kitchen cabinets are built specifically for the kitchen design  and include specialty doors, interior features, woods, and construction.

Kitchen Cabinet Grades.

Economy grade: Stock-grade kitchen cabinets with flush-face doors. Doors made from veneered particleboard.

Standard grade: Stock-grade kitchen cabinets with raised panel or cathedral doors. Interior panel may be plywood. Lower grade plastic-laminate face cabinets.

Semi-custom kitchen cabinets: Semi-custom grade kitchen cabinets are available in a wide variety of styles and shapes. Within limits, the manufacturer builds the kitchen cabinets to match the kitchen design.

High grade: Semi-custom kitchen cabinets with raised panel or cathedral doors. Higher grade plastic-laminate face and foil-face cabinets.

Deluxe grade: Semi-custom kitchen cabinets with raised panel or cathedral doors. May include special slide-out drawers, pull-out baskets, glass doors, or foil-face cabinets. Materials include cherry, pecan, and Shaker-style maple or pine.

Custom grade: Custom kitchen cabinets with raised panel or cathedral doors. May include special slide-out drawers, pull-out baskets, mullion or leaded glass doors. Materials include cherry, pecan, and Shaker-style maple or pine.

Custom deluxe grade: Same as Custom Grade, may have some curved wood cabinets and more custom features.

Foil-Face Cabinets. Foil-faced cabinets (also called thermo foil) are coated with rigid polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that has been heated and pressed. The interior core is usually medium density particleboard. Currently, there is no good way to repair scratched or dented foil-face cabinets. Although colors do not fade from foil-faces, it is almost impossible to replace doors or other parts with colors that will match. Foil-face cabinets are high to custom deluxe quality depending on the selection of interior features and the complexity of the design.
